my old camera that i carry around in my purse has pretty much died on me. in order to use it... i have to pull the lense out, do a slight twist to the right and hold while pushing the button. and it can only be zoomed out at a certain distance.
nice.
(don't get me wrong. it's been a good little camera. we bought at the end of 2006. it's gone on some amazing adventures with us. and it's done a fine job of capturing our life's little moments. and tiny enough to put into my purse. and for that... i've been thankful.)
but now... i've been doing some research and my big debate is this:
* just getting another $100 - $200 camera that i know will be non.functioning in then next 2-3 years.
or...
* splurging and getting me a rebel xsi!
now i've done my pros & cons lists and i've been doing some research of my own.
but i want to know the opinion of those of you who own a rebel.
what model do you have? lenses? what are your pros & cons? and any other tid.bits you want to give me would be MUCH appreciated.
from doing my research... the only con i hear is that nobody can put it down. :)
so...
splurge or not?
the one i really want as of now is the canon rebel xsi.

LUST! how much is that little bundle? i SOOOOOOO want a nice camera... i haven't done my research, because i would just be more disappointed that i can't afford one. :( i don't know what to tell you...
I highly recommend saving up and getting the Rebel!!! I have been using my XTi for the past 3 years, both for just my family and for clients. I am ready to upgrade sometime soon, but my camera has been great. My very favorite lens is the 50mm 1.8, it is very light weight and it only costs about $100 on Amazon. You won't be disappointed!
So I don't have the rebel. . .I have the nikon d40 and LOVE it! BUT. . . lugging around that baby gets old! Its a bummer when you want a quick shot but don't have something handy, BUT its so nice to have the big slr too. . . .i say get the big one, and get a little cheap one too.
my mom LOVES her Rebel! she just got a new fatty lens for Christmas. the only downfall is that she can't just tote it in her purse and capture those unsuspecting moments all of the time.
I have a Nikon D60 and I LOVE IT. You will love a digital SLR camera :)
hey i'm one of jamie slade's good friends here in texas. i have that camera and i love it. i have been doing photography work with it for the last 2 years and its been great. for your first camera, it would be wonderful! its a fun, but expensive hobby. you will LOVE the difference it makes in taking pictures of your kiddos tho! if you take lots of videos with a point and shoot, you may want to consider looking into the t1i, or the t2i, which both do HD video (and have the same kit lens as the xsi, and have more megapixels than the xsi)! wish i had that feature! anyways, hope that helps! you can email me or find me on facebook (amber roach) if you want to chat more!
Hey! So I did a TON of research on this! I seriously bought a camera, tried it out for a week, took it back, bought another camera, tried it out for a week, and took it back....umm, like four or five times. The people in the Electronics department knew my name whenever I came in. I took back two canons and two nikons and I decided on the Nikon D5000. It was easier for me to figure out and learn. It has Live View all the time, (not just in one mode like the Canon T1i, none of the other Canons I tried had Live View.) I like that I don't have to have my face up against the camera with the Live View. It has HD video recording, lots of different scenes to choose from (like food, snow, beach, autumn, hilight, lowlight, and lots more.) It has a button that answers questions if you don't know what something means. These DSLR cameras are kinda tricky to fiqure out. But I'm sure there's a Digital Photography class you can take! I will be taking one soon. Some people are die hard Canon fans and some are Nikon fans.....I tried them both and the Nikon was much better for me. I got the package deal with one lens and a bag with two DVD tutorial videos for around $640.oo I can't remember the exact price, but I know online they are around $635.00I just bought mine in February. Good Luck!!! When you do buy your camera, there are lots of online tutorials on Youtube.
I just got a Nikon and you'll LOVE LOVE LOVE having a SLR but you'll still want a little one for your purse cuz you won't always want to take this one and/or you won't have it on hand for those unexpected little things. ...just my 4 cents!
HHmmmm... well I bought a Canon XTI and I love it. I still don't know how to use it that well, but it does take some nice pics. The big thing is the lens, not the original lens, but an aftermarket lens. For a really great pic you have to have a good lens. (And the lens I want is about $800...so I will pretty much never get it...but anyways) I have heard that Nikon D40s are nice too. I can totally tell was pictures I take with my XTi and what pictures I take with my old Canon powershot, BIG differences. Good luck!
If you want to see the difference between a photo with my XTi and my little canon powershot camera...go to my blog. The pics of the tamale 101 are with my xti, those pictures are clearer than the pics of Tahlia in her red dress. Those pics were taken with my little powershot camera and those pics are grainy and not as clear. Go with the bigdog!!
PS Make sure you get insurance of that bad boy. I did and if I drop it or if it breaks, it is soothing to know that I can get insurance money to replace it. (The insurance was like $25 for a whole year...way worth the $25.
Hey Sheena, I have my camera for sale if you want to take a look at it. It's a Canon 50d. It does run more than the Rebel's so if it's affordable you won't be dissapointed. Email me if you are interested.

go for it! I never owned a digital point & shoot! I just couldn't do it! I love my Nikon!
I have a Nikon D5000. I really like it. I don't another nice camera to compare it to as it's the first nice one I've had, but my husband did a lot of research on it and my bro-in-law has one too and he loves it. I'm sure you'll love your camera whether you go with a rebel, nikon, or something else. the features that i really like on mine are twist around screen, video(that is a must!). photoloon.com is a good place to go--they have the best prices--we were able to get ours $200 cheaper than target. but i will warn you -if you use photoloon, they will try to sell you a bunch of other stuff and you have to be clear with them or they try to tack it onto your order anyway and charge you. i'm sorry if i'm not more help because i just started learning about cameras myself. my neighbor has a rebel something--you can go to her photography website and she would be happy to tell you how she likes hers. ericajessop.blogspot.com
good luck!
also, i love the live view--i don't know how people have cameras without them!
i have a SONY A-300 SLR camera and love it. I will never go back to a smaller type camera...i love the pics it takes! I need myself a fun new lens though...you can always upgrade with cameras like that!!!!
